Over 66 thousand IT professionals in Bulgaria: how is employment in the sector moving?

Are there enough jobs for IT professionals? The answer is yes, if we look at the open positions on H512.com’s Job Board, where you can find nearly 2,000 listings. And there are bound to be more for two main reasons that inspire optimism.

The first is that this recession will also be over and analysts say the world economy will start to recover at the end of the year. And the second is that all sectors will continue to digitise, which will inevitably require more expert IT hands and minds.

As we wait for the clouds to clear, we turn our gaze to the current state of industry employment in our country. As of the end of October, employees in all of the more than 1,500 companies with H512.com profiles and offices in the country numbered more than 208 thousand, with 32% of them working in IT departments.

IT professionals in our country – product or service, in small or large companies?

How are these over 66 thousand people distributed in the industry? Traditionally, technicians in product companies lead the employment baton with 65% of all those working in IT departments. They are followed by employees in service companies, experts in the IT consulting sector and those who implement software systems.

The total percentage of employees in IT departments exceeds 100, as many companies have indicated in their profiles that they operate in more than one technology category.

Looking only at the companies that listed only one activity, as of the end of October, the largest number of IT professionals work in pure-play product companies. Software developers again ranked second, followed by employees engaged in IT consulting and those involved in software systems implementation.

The situation is similar if we consider only the companies that rested one of the four types of activities in our Job Board.

In terms of company size, small and micro employers employed 1/5 or nearly 20% of all employees. Approximately the same number of technology professionals are in medium sized companies, and the largest companies, those with 70+ IT employees, have the most staff – nearly 46 thousand.

From the point of view of the employers’ head offices, which have detailed profiles in H512.com’s Job Board, employment in the IT departments of foreign companies is higher – 58% of the country’s technicians work for them. The remaining 42% are employed by companies based in Bulgaria.

Recent weeks have been particularly busy in terms of government-level meetings with potential IT investors from the US, Taiwan and Japan, so employment in foreign companies has the potential to grow even more if investment intentions become a reality.

In the meantime, we continue to keep a watchful eye on the dynamics of the IT job market, because that is where thousands of professionals export 4.5% of GDP on their backs.
