Call for recruitment of Researchers in Machine Learning (R1 & R2)

GATE is a joint initiative between Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden and Chalmers Industrial Technology, Sweden. The Swedish institutions are leading organizations in strategic initiatives such as AI Sweden, AI Research Centre, AI Innovation of Sweden and the Digital Twin Cities Centre.

GATE develops research capacity and potential in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, cultivating the next generation of leading scientists by expanding the existing research network and establishing long-term agreements with leading global organizations. The Institute builds sustainable stakeholder relationships, focusing on technological collaboration between government, industry, academia and non-governmental organizations towards Artificial Intelligence and smart decision-making models.

Responsibilities

• Conduct applied research in deep learning methods across multiple domains.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate state-of-the-art neural network models.
• Write and publish research papers in top-tier ML/AI conferences and journals.
• Collaborate with domain experts to apply ML solutions to real-world problems.
• Design and execute experiments, including dataset preparation, model training, and evaluation.
• Build and maintain automated ML pipelines;
• Scientific paper writing;
• Keep up-to-date with the latest technology trends;
• Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Junior researcher: А minimum of bachelor’s or master’s degree in in computer science, applied mathematics, engineering, or in a related discipline;
• Experienced researcher: A PhD Degree in computer science, geoinformatics/geomatics, engineering, or in a related discipline or a Master’s Degree plus a minimum of 4 years industry-based relevant research experience;
• Proficiency in Python with a good grasp of PyTorch or other deep learning frameworks.
• Strong understanding of neural networks and deep learning architectures (Transformers, LLMs, RNNs, Graph Neural Networks, Computer Vision etc.)
• Experience in ML model development, including algorithm selection, fdata preparation, feature engineering, model training, hyperparameter tuning.
• Solid knowledge of statistics, probability, and mathematical foundations of ML.
• Self-motivated, independent, and passionate about applied research.
• Strong ability to analyze and solve real-world problems using ML techniques.
• Willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment.
• Fluency in English.

Selection stages

• Examination of the documents submitted and admission to the competition of those who satisfy the requirements set out in the notice. The successful candidates will be informed by 31 August 2025.
• An interview with the successful candidates will take place until 11 September 2025.
• All interviewed candidates will be informed of the outcome of the competition.
• The selected candidates will be hired on a labour contract.
